Illustrating the strength and adaptability of its basic design, the Supermarine Spitfire was continually developed throughout World War II. In the end, more than 20,000 aircraft were produced in 24 different variants. The Mark V variant was actually something of an upgrade to the aircraft that fought during the Battle of Britain, but with the production of the 6487 it proved to be the hardest-produced Spitfire variant.
